With uncertainties caused by such factos as the recession, political upheavals, and globalization, discussions about education are growing ever louder. In particular, higher education should be able to instill within students a greater ability for self-organization, which they will need to deal with the challenges of the 21st century. For this reason, it is necessary to develop special teaching methods and to rethink the design of learning systems. This paper describes an innovative research project that examined the ways in which the implementation of Problem-Based Learning changes the perceptions and attitudes of students towards learning. It also describes the key findings from the study and shows how these findings can be applied when designing learning systems.
