A specific model for central units focusing on the development of academic teaching is suggested. Based on the three levels course, study program and institution it aims to provide appropriate services to the faculty and to meet the demands of highly diversified individuals. The staff of central units is usually part of the administration. But the specific requirements concerning didactical innovation include in addition to specific professional qualifications also research and teaching experiences. In this context hybrid professional identities are essential and together with the described model a precondition for acting flexibly in a dynamic academic environment
