In order to examine how students cope with the medical curriculum, medical students at the University of Freiburg, Germany, were asked to report on their study and life situations and to evaluate the quality of e-learning in medical school. The findings indicate that medical students invest a considerably higher amount of time for their studies than students in other subjects. In addition, a high percentage of medical students are committed to extra-curricular activities, such as part-time work or volunteer work. In order to reduce the workload and to increase the compatibility between curricular and extra-curricular activities, students suggest first of all a more flexible curriculum. Additional e-learning resources are to support students in their self-studies and to promote a more flexible learning approach.
