Within the framework of Bologna, it is a central requirement to design teaching and learning processes in a student-oriented manner. This challenge has to be mastered with regard to traditional learning cultures. The students bring along certain motivational prerequisites and a certain understanding of their own roles in the learning process which form the learning culture. If higher education development is to proactively design organizational structures, the students‘ internal characteristics have to be taken into account. The article describes an analysis of the learning culture of three universities in Germany, Austria and Switzerland which shows that the students‘ personal dispositions can be developed and that they can be partly directed by the design of the organizational conditions.
