This paper discusses the “new” students of the “Bologna era”: professional qualified people – students without a higher education entrance examination. After pointig out the relevance of the issue in Germany, the studying parameters for non-traditional students are being discussed. Within the main part of the article the “new students” of the Weiterbildungsakademie at Aalen university are described. The sociodemografic profile of the students, the studying motivation, the expectations about the extra-occupational study course and their working environment is illustrated. As a conclusion the characteristics of the target group are pointed out, especially the decisive role of the employer is explained and further research questions are brought up.
