Universities’ answer to the increasing demands on higher education management is the establishment of suitable units, being in charge of management tasks. Quality assurance in higher education is one of the fields undergoing “academic professionalisation”. Using the example of the Centre for Teaching Quality Development (ZfQ) at Potsdam University the paper discusses how professionals in higher education management stimulate and implement processes of change at university level. Along with sound professional skills (e.g. methodological knowledge), a deep understanding of the different stakeholder interests and expectations is mission critical for their work.
