Using the example of the Zurich University of Applied Sciences (ZHAW), this article analyses success factors for staff supporting research activities at a newly merged multi-disciplinary university of applied sciences. Particular attention is paid to the facilitation of cooperation of those involved, and to the contribution of the support staff to the development of the university. The article concludes by giving the competences required of those working in the “Third Space“, derived from the experiences described.
