It shows how MOOC platforms currently dominate the international debate about “small” certificates of higher education institutions, but there are not many universities that recognise the certificates. Both the European and the Austrian debates on microcertificates are mainly about measures for comparability and the use of standards, and MOOCs are hardly mentioned. However, the framework of the European MOOC Consortium is making an interesting contribution to the debate. Finally, this paper describes the introduction of the first Austrian microcredentials by Graz University of Technology, as well as the institution’s use of MOOCs
