The use of simulation methods in teacher education can be theoretically supported, and their efficacy has been well established. It is unclear, however, which types of simulation methods are used in which subjects and in what contexts. For this paper, a systematic review was conducted to identify current trends and untapped potential in the use of simulation methods in teacher education. The results show that simulation methods are typically used to promote communicative, diversity-related and classroom management skills. One promising type of simulation method, simulation games (German: Planspiel) is seldom used in teacher education. This paper discusses the implications for both research and teaching, including teacher training.
