Research-based learning (RBL) aims to introduce students to science and research (practices). Due to the pandemic,  RBL has now been implemented on a larger scale in online  teaching for the first time. This paper focuses on how (student) research is conducted in online RBL. As part of a  qualitative research project, university instructors were  interviewed about their experiences with online RBL. The  results indicate that, as long as the properties of online  teaching are taken into account, online RBL can facilitate an  introduction to digital research (practices), the use of  ‘new’ technologies and tools and the reflection on research.
