The paper presents the teaching concept of an elective course in the bachelor’s and master’s programs of Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics, and Industrial Engineering, which enrolls approx. 30 students per year. The vision of the teaching concept is that the students should acquire competencies for solving engineering problems by working autonomously on open-ended questions according to scientific standards. To this end, the teaching concept combines elements of constructive alignment, inverted classroom and competence-oriented examinations. Teaching evaluations and student feedback confirm that the teaching concept achieves its aim and that the students gain employability.
