The fundamental change which affects higher education institutions is described and analysed on the basis of the term debordering. The article focusses on the question how current trends are changing academic teaching and learning. This concept is applied to understand changes in higher education on a geographic, curricular and scientific level. Moreover, target-groups of higher education and a new interrelation of state, society and HE institutions are taken into account.
