Universities develop and teach efficient concepts of leadership. But they do not apply them as as often as companies do. In this paper, we discuss the transfer of leadership strategies and basics of human resource management to the management of universities. In our view, the formulation of clear guidelines and goals is an important precondition for an efficient management. Professors and all kind of leaders have the responsibility to bring guidelines and general rules into action. They have to be fair and transparent in behavior and decisions, and should be a role model for their employees. A main source of excellence in universities is staff development which can be strengthened by participation and support of autonomy.
