Colleges, universities and, of course, universities of arts need to face the challenge of fostering both broad participation and excellence. This article demonstrates that broad participation and excellence do not have to represent a contradiction. Diversity resulting from broad participation can have an enriching effect on the collective outcomes, if suitable precautions and measures are taken. To illustrate this idea, the inclusive band All Stars Inclusive from the University of Music and Performing Arts, Vienna, is used as an example to demonstrate the factors that promote participation and excellence.
