Extra-occupational studies are gaining more and more interest in Germany. The organization of these studies is quite heterogeneous within the German educational system: some universities provide distance learning, while others emphasise the need for in-person attendance. This might be challenging, as the group of extra-occupational students is quite different from those who enroll in undergraduate courses. The most important difference is the challenge of reconciling occupation, family and university. Therefore, this paper analyses possibilities for an active teaching and learning process achieved by implementing synchronous and asynchronous digital teaching in extra-occupational studies and their impacts on learning outcomes.
