For more than two decades, technological developments have been shaping the digitisation of society, businesses and universities. The second wave of digitisation, driven in particular by data analytics and artificial intelligence (AI), entails fundamental changes and new human-machine interactions. The understanding of a successful human-machine partnership, which aims to achieve synergies through complementary competences, is the focus of augmentation. This paper focuses on augmentation strategies in order to demonstrate the beneficial use of data analytics and AI for the effective development of student competences in higher education. The case study ‘Development scenarios for writing skills’ shows how augmentation strategies can be implemented.
