Universities of teacher education became part of the Swiss national higher education system as a result of the Higher Education Act. They are the youngest higher education institutions and have developed their own profile to differentiate themselves from traditional universities and universities of applied sciences. Although they possess some unique characteristics, until now they have not been considered of equal value as the other two forms of educational institution. However, due to their unique profile and expertise in learning and teaching, they have the potential to become well-established institutions in the field of higher education.
