In Germany as in other countries, continuing higher education has become more important as a new academic mission. However, universities involved in this field have to act on a very competitive market which is occupied by many other institutions and organizations. Empirical research on the range and extent of the activities of German universities in continuing education is often based on a supply oriented perspective which cannot cover the relative position of higher education institutions on the complete market of continuing higher education provisions. This article will present results of a new comparative study which is based on a social demand approach analysing data from seven countries on the participation of graduates in continuing education offered not only by higher education institutions but also by other providers.
