In the past years, the number of academically qualified people in higher education institutions has clearly increased, who are not primarily active in research and teaching themselves but entrusted to prepare decisions of the management, establish services and actively shape the core processes of research, teaching, and study. Whitchurch calls these people “third space professionals”. The authors of the present contribution call this group “higher education professionals” (HEPROs). First results of a project funded by the German Federal Ministry for Education and Research about ”the role of the new higher education professions for the redesign of teaching and studying (HEPRO)” are presented. The project is carried out at the International Centre for Higher Education Research at the University of Kassel (INCHER-Kassel).
