The label “university of innovation” is currently being widely bandied about within the German university sphere. The political objective is for universities to act as catalysts for economic development within their local regions. Of course, for universities to succeed in assuming local civic responsibilities, they must embark on a more intensive process of self-reflection; this paper represents an initial attempt to do just that. Rather than dwelling on results, it discusses important points of departure for knowledge transfer and collaborative initiatives. In addition, the paper emphasises that the initial focus ought to be less on structural and procedural collaboration quantities and more on collaboration qualities.
