For decades, societal education in Austria concentrated almost exclusively on the national political system. However, the current changes to the teacher training curriculum show a trend towards internationalization. “Global Citizenship Education” or “Political Education in the Global Context” have become standalone courses or interdisciplinary entryways into both university and other tertiary level curricula.
But how should the process of developing student competencies for democracy be initiated in the context of global interconnection? This paper discusses challenges instructors in teacher training programs face in confronting these transnational developments.
