Research methods and results may enhance the acceptance and benefits of quality development in higher education. Taking the first year in higher education as an example, this paper presents a framework to analyse teaching and learning accordingly. It examines the effects of first-year support programmes in terms of both their contribution to the development of academic competence and to coping with institutional study requirements. The present empirical study combines qualitative and quantitative methods in order to provide holistic insights into the effects of first-year support, which are relevant for quality development in teaching and learning.
