Due to the limited possibilities to exert influence within the social system of higher education institutions via hierachical coordination, communication – and thereby conditions for information flow, dominant cognitive frames and trust – plays an important role for organisational development. Based on two practical examples from their work in quality management, the authors demonstrate how they try to effectively shape communication with the goal of facilitating organisational change. They reflect on the structure of quality management at their university with the help of social network analysis and relate their findings to the central concepts of network theory.
