There is a long tradition of research-based or inquiry-based learning in higher education. Although several concepts have evolved around these terms since the 1970s, a systematization that captures the variety within these terms is missing. The same situation applies when it comes to guidance for designing and implementing research-based learning. Angela Brew’s framework from 2010 targets these problems. The framework supports pedagogical decision-making processes as well as decisions regarding research-based learning on the curricular level. We have been testing it for the German context and have devised an adapted framework that might also be used to analyze diverse research-based learning initiatives.
