Academic continuing education is embedded in a contradictory context between science and profitability. Through its function as a “University for Continuing Education“ and its statutory requirement of a high rate of self-financing, the Danube-University Krems is unique amongst the European universities. Accordingly, its human resource development presents a particular challenge. Using the Danube-University Krems as an example, this paper analyzes the differences in the personnel-structure of its scientific staff and requirements for career-development in comparison to traditional universities. Based on this analysis, a new model for the personnel-structure as well as possible career paths and incentive systems for the scientific personnel can be developed.
