There are several challenges involved in teaching at the university level, including how to deal with the heterogeneity of the students, how to stimulate more active student participation, and how to improve the feedback loop between the students and the professor. In order to meet these challenges, we applied and evaluated a combination of the Peer Instruction and Just-in-Time Teaching methods for a calculus course. Our results show that these methods lead to a more active in-class role for the students and provide several options for formative feedback. In particular, we observed a high level of acceptance for both methods by students and professors alike.
